South Sudan village

There’s a lot I could write, but I’ll leave it in pictures.  The village we visited was a cluster of Tukals (huts) made of sticks and clay and thatched with palm branches.  This village is a surviving remnant of a village scattered during the war.  They hope to have their original area de-mined soon to be able to return home.  They also struggle with alcoholism and cholera.

Pictured is one of the tukals, the only boots in the village, the cholera treatment tent, and the delicious lunch they served us—sorghum and greens.

Dogs in South Sudan

We don’t really have dogs in the islands…  but the girls found dogs to play with here!

South Sudan from the air

These were taken coming into South Sudan.  The mountains are rugged and beautiful.  The villages are in small clusters in the mountains or out in the plains.  The grasslands were being burned to spur new grass growth.  The town of Torit—airstrip with my folks’ house marked.

Flying in tiny planes...

Tiny planes are like… ?

Not EVERYONE threw up, so that was a success…

Out of the islands...

Camel crossings, Desert Roses, Thorns and Scorpions….  Everything is tougher in the desert.
