Ethiopian Airways is the big airline in this part of the world.  You can’t beat their prices, they’ll be cheaper even if you do have to be routed an extra 4000 miles.  It does have some quirks though…  Sometimes you are on a brand new luxury Dreamliner, sometimes you fly on planes that have duct tape on the outside (?!).  

Three things I noticed on my 5 trips through Addis:

1. On one flight we watched a movie… on a single television… with a VCR.
2. In the airport stores the cigarette cartons have grim health warnings on them: “SMOKING KILLS” etc.  Except the Chinese brand that comes in a Gold Box called “Double Happiness.”
3. Every time I connect through the Addis airport I pray there will be no fire.  Not only for the loss of property and life that could result, but also I think it would be awkward to pull the fire alarm.
